Before Freefolk, There Was Music

I got my start in journalism on the arts and entertainment beat in high school, when “music journalism” mostly meant convincing bands to let a teenager write about them. In 2018, I started writing album reviews and covering artists like Rainbow Kitten Surprise, discovering pretty quickly that I liked more than just listening to music—I liked figuring out why it mattered.

That curiosity followed me after high school. I received a scholarship to study journalism and continued writing about music through Western Washington University, covering artists, performances, and the ever-changing culture around them.

What started as album reviews became an education in storytelling: how to find the angle, ask better questions, capture a moment, and make someone care about a story they didn’t know they needed.

Turns out, I’ve been doing PR ever since, I just didn’t call it that yet.
